Celebrating the richness of Assamese language, literature, and culture — nurturing scholars who carry forward a proud heritage.
The Department of Assamese is one of the founding departments of Paschim Dhemaji College, established in 1997. It has been at the forefront of preserving and promoting the Assamese language, literature, and cultural heritage in the Dhemaji district — one of Assam's most linguistically rich regions.
The department offers undergraduate programs in Assamese Language and Literature with a deep focus on classical and modern Assamese poetry, prose, drama, and folk literature. Students are exposed to the works of legendary Assamese literary figures alongside contemporary voices shaping the language today.
Faculty members are passionate researchers and educators who actively publish in reputed journals and participate in national seminars, enriching the academic environment of the department. The department also engages students in community outreach, oral history documentation, and folk-culture preservation initiatives unique to the Dhemaji region.
Cultural Mission: The department is deeply committed to documenting and revitalising the oral traditions, folk songs, and dialects of the tribal and indigenous communities surrounding Paschim Dhemaji — preserving a cultural wealth that belongs to all of Assam.
